lake markkleeberg
Discover Lake Markkleeberg, a modern recreation area. The lake was created by flooding a former opencast mine. Since its opening to the public in July 2006, the lake provides a wide variety of recreational and sporting offerings: swimming, sunbathing, walking, hiking, cycling, skating, riding a model train in the “model park Auenhain” or taking a boat tour with a solar boat.
The main attraction, however, is the canoe park, which is Germany’s most modern wild-water facility. Not only will the canoe slalom elite practice here, starting October 2006, but the canoe park will also offer rafting tours, hydro speed, freestyle and canoe polo for beginners as well as advanced hobby athletes.
Other projects such as the holiday and recreational park “Vorwerk Auenhain” and the restaurant along the promenade are beginning to take shape.
A plan for the region includes the integration of Lake Markkleeberg and Lake Störmthal into a stretch of water that connects the city of Leipzig to the excisting “Leipziger Neuseenland” seascape through a series of rivers and canals.
